CGI Acquires Windy City Publishing In Deal Including Regional Publications
By Daniel Kaplan, Staff Writer, SportsBusiness Journal

4/21/09 - Endurance sports company Competitor Group (CGI) today will announce that it has acquired Windy City Publishing. The deal includes the company's six regional active lifestyle publications covering the metro regions of N.Y., Chicago, Boston, Denver, Minneapolis and DC.

The deal includes Windy City Sports, Metrosports Magazine, New England Sports, Rocky Mountain Sports and Twin Cities Sports, as well as online assets. Those brands will cease, and instead the magazines will be folded into Competitor Magazine, a free CGI publication that will now have a circulation of 800,000 copies. Doug Kaplan, owner of Windy City, will join CGI as Publisher of Competitor Magazine and establish CGI's Midwest office in Chicago.

CGI is owned by Falconhead Capital. It stages 26 endurance events, including the Rock n' Roll Marathon Series. It also owns publications Triathlete Magazine, Inside Triathlon and VeloNews, now with a combined circulation, including Competitor Magazine, of over 1 million. Terms of the Windy City deal were not disclosed.
